This chapter describes our approach to constructing a large lexicon from LDOCE for use in an English morphological and syntactic analysis system. Starting with a discussion of the types of errors that occur in LDOCE, we rule out the possibility of constructing the lexicon fully automatically. We then go on to describe an alternative methodology which we have developed to perform this task, and an implemented system which embodies the methodology. The system takes the form of an interactive environment for use by a linguist or lexicographer, providing largely automated generation and testing of lexical entries.
